(GREENVILLE)- At approximately 8:56 p.m. on Sunday, a fatal collision occurred at the intersection of Laurens Road and E. Washington Street involving a silver Nissan Altima and a red moped. The driver of the moped, 46-year-old Ioannis George Tsanktakis of the 500 Block of Lowndes Hill Road in Greenville, was pronounced dead shortly after the accident.
According to eyewitnesses, the driver of the vehicle, Gabriel Martinez Perez, 60, failed to yield while making a left turn towards 1500 E. Washington Street, striking the moped and ejecting the rider to the roadway.
Responding EMS and Greenville Fire Department personnel noted that Mr. Perez smelled of alcohol.
Mr. Tsanktakis and Mr. Perez were both transported to an area medical facility for treatment.
GPD officers observed that Mr. Tsanktakis suffered numerous injuries to include a severe head injury and possibly a broken leg. He was pronounced dead of multiple blunt force injuries at approximately 9:40 p.m.
Officers from the Greenville Police Department Traffic Reconstruction Unit responded to the incident location to process the scene and secure evidence, which is standard protocol when a fatality is involved in a collision.
Mr. Perez remains in the hospital. Upon his release from medical treatment, he is expected to be charged with Felony DUI with Death.
