Commercial Undergrounding

Working withe Duke Energy, the City will bury power lines in three separate locations.

West Washington Undergrounding Phase II

Power and communication lines will be buried and new streetlights and decorative pedestrian lights will be added. A new mast arm traffic signal system will also be installed at the intersection of W. Washington Street and W. Broad Street. The project area includes the following locations:

  • W. Washington Street, from S. Hudson Street to S. Academy Street
  • W. Broad Street, from W. Washington Street to W. McBee Avenue
  • W. McBee Avenue, from S. Academy Street to W. Broad Street

Timeline: Construction is expected to be completed in April 2019.
June 2019 Update: Project is 99% complete

Unity Park Undergrounding Phase I

Power and communication lines will be buried along Welborn Street and along S. Hudson Street, from Gibbs Street to the Reedy River. The ultimate goal is to bury all existing overhead utilities within and along the perimeter of Unity Park. This includes S. Hudson Street, Mulberry Street and W. Washington Street, from S. Hudson Street to Trescott Street.

Timeline: Project design is expected to be completed in April 2019. Construction is expected to begin in September of 2019.
July 2019 Update: Project is currently in the design stage.

Williams Street Commercial Services Undergrounding

Power and communication lines across Williams Street (in front of 117 Williams Street) will be buried.

Timeline: Construction is expected to begin in July 2019. Project awarded to Infinity Contractors.
